Why do XL has unique filters ?

We had hoped to maintain the diameter of the XL so that it could use the same exact filter paper as the Original (and Go and Clear).  This would have been extremely convenient for our existing users who now also choose to buy an XL, and would have been extremely convenient for the simplicity of our own supply chain.  However, during the development stage it was determined that this resulted in a less than desirable plunging experience.  So in the end we increased both diameter and height, keeping roughly the same proportion as our standard sized coffee presses.  And this required a new filter size, unique to the XL.

Why are XL filters expensive ?

These unique XL paper filters come at a higher cost per filter.  Not because the paper is larger, rather because this unique size developed only for the AeroPress XL coffee press means far lower volumes from our vendor than our existing filter size (compatible with AeroPress Original, Clear and Go). which means a much higher cost per filter.  The real cost of our filters is based less on paper and more on the production volume since they have a fair amount of fixed costs (including manual labor) when they run our products so the size of the production runs impacts the cost.  And as a reminder, our products are made in the USA.

Chemex filters remove even the finest sediment particles as well as the undesirable oils and fats. The formulation of the filter permits the proper infusion time by regulating the filtration rate – not to slow, not too fast. Good infusion of the coffee grounds (as in brewing and steeping tea) gives coffee a richer flavor while at the same time making possible precise fractional extraction: filtering out the undesirable components which make coffee bitter by allowing only the desirable flavor elements of the coffee bean to pass through.

The Chemex filter is guaranteed not to burst under the weight of the liquid during filtration, and not to break when lifting out the grounds.

• Step 1: Fold the CHEMEX filter in half. Then fold in half again, bringing the two corners together. Place your finger between the 3rd and 4th layer and open into a funnel.
• Step 2: Place the funnel in the top portion of the CHEMEX coffeemaker, with 3 layers on the groove side. The groove is an air vent (and also the pouring spout) and allows air to escape from the lower portion of the coffeemaker, letting the coffee filter
• Step 3: Put coffee in the filter paper cone. Use one heaping tablespoon per cup of coffee (adjust to personal taste if needed after first brew). Refer to brewing instructions for remaining steps.
